Basketball Game Preview: Coronado Mustangs vs. Amarillo Sandies

Coronado hasn't had much luck against Amarillo recently, but that could start to change on Friday. The Coronado Mustangs will welcome the Amarillo Sandies at 6:00 p.m.

Last Tuesday, Coronado was beaten by Monterey 103-42. While losing is never fun, the Mustangs can't take it too hard given the team's big disadvantage in MaxPreps' Texas basketball rankings (they are ranked 446th, while the Plainsmen are ranked fourth).

Meanwhile, Amarillo waltzed into their match on Tuesday with two straight wins... but they left with three. They came out on top against the Dons by a score of 59-48.

Amarillo pushed their record up to 22-4 with the victory, which was their 18th straight at home dating back to last season. They've dominated over that stretch too, winning by an average of 33.4 points. As for Coronado, this is the second loss in a row for them and nudges their season record down to 9-17.

Coronado took a serious blow against Amarillo in their previous meeting back in November of 2024, falling 71-31. That contest was all but decided by halftime, at which point Coronado was down 32-11.
