Softball Recap: Make It Four in a Row for Staunton

Staunton extended their winning streak to four on Wednesday, bumping their season record up to 18-3 in the process. Their pitcher stepped up to hand the Southwestern Piasa Birds a 3-0 shutout. The Bulldogs have seen this before: they got the W the last time they saw the Piasa Birds, too.

Not much got past Grace Burris, who gave up just a hit and racked up six Ks to keep Southwestern off the board. Burris has been consistent recently: she hasn't given up more than one walk in four consecutive appearances.

At the plate, Staunton's victory was truly a team effort as six different players contributed at least one hit. One of them was Izzy Janus, who went 1-for-3 with two RBI. That's the most RBI Janus has posted since back in April.

As for Southwestern, their loss ended an eight-game streak of wins at home and dropped them to 14-5-1. Considering the last time they couldn't score was back in April, the team can't take the result too hard.

On Southwestern's side, Grace Strohbeck spent all seven innings on the mound, and it's clear why: she surrendered only one earned (and two unearned) runs on six hits.

Staunton does not have any more games scheduled as of now. As for Southwestern, they will venture away from home to take on Vandalia at 4:30 p.m. on Thursday. The Vandals have struggled to contain batters this season (they've allowed 7.63 runs per game on average), something the Piasa Birds will no doubt try to take advantage of.
