There's no place like home for Mt. Vernon, who bounced back after a loss on the road last Wednesday. They narrowly escaped with a victory as the squad sidled past the Watkins Memorial Warriors 5-3. This was a revenge game for the Yellowjackets: when they faced off against the Warriors on April 11th, they had to take a 4-2 loss.

Kayden Packard spent all seven innings on the mound, and it's clear why: he surrendered only one earned (and two unearned) runs on five hits. He has been nothing but reliable: he hasn't given up more than two walks in three consecutive appearances.

At the plate, the team relied heavily on Zac Clow, who went 2-for-3 with one home run, one stolen base, and two RBI. Ezra Kurek was another key player, going 1-for-2 with two runs.

Mt. Vernon has been performing well recently as they've won five of their last six matchups. That's provided a nice bump to their 8-6 record this season. The wins came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 3.8 runs on average over those games. As for Watkins Memorial, they moved to 6-4 with that defeat, which also ended their five-game winning streak.

Both teams will have to hit the road in their upcoming games. Mt. Vernon will face off against Licking Valley at 5:00 p.m. on Tuesday. The Panthers will roll in looking for their sixth straight victory, something the Yellowjackets surely won't give up without a fight. As for Watkins Memorial, they will square off against Zanesville at 5:00 p.m. on Tuesday. The Blue Devils will aim to continue their three-game streak of scoring more runs each contest than the last.
