Softball Recap: Kirtland Comes Up Short

Kirtland had lost 14 straight on the road dating back to last season, but on Wednesday they dropped their record down to 3-5 to make it 15. They came up short against the Cardinal Huskies, falling 24-10. The Hornets were not able to make up for their defeat to the Huskies from their previous meeting back in April of 2024.

Maggie Kothera made the most of her time at bat despite the final result and went 3-for-4 with one home run, six RBI, and two runs. She has been hot recently, having posted three or more hits the last three times she's played. The team also got some help courtesy of Sydnie Sullivan, who got on base in two of her three plate appearances with two runs and one stolen base.

As for Cardinal, their win ended a four-game drought at home and bumped them up to 5-6. The high-scoring performance was a welcome turnaround for their hitters, who had struggled in the games prior.

On Cardinal's side, Natalie Soltis was a major factor no matter where she played. She didn't allow a single earned run while striking out six over five innings pitched. Soltis was also stellar in the batter's box, going 2-for-3 with two stolen bases, three runs, and three RBI. She also hit a double, marking her first of the season.

In other batting news, Cardinal got a massive performance out of Adelyn Grant, who went 4-for-5 with one home run, three runs, and three RBI. That's the most hits Grant has posted since back in April of 2024. Olivia Krebs was another key player, getting on base in four of her five plate appearances with one home run, four runs, and two stolen bases.

Both teams are looking forward to the support of their home crowds in their upcoming games. Kirtland will challenge Beachwood at 4:30 p.m. on Thursday. As for Cardinal, they will square off against Lakeside at 4:30 p.m. on Friday.
