Baseball Recap: Oxnard Triumphs

The Oxnard Yellowjackets narrowly escaped with a victory as the squad sidled past the Village Christian Crusaders 6-4.

Rick Ahumada looked comfortable as he tossed two innings while giving up no earned runs off one hit. Oxnard is 4-1 when Ahumada allows one or fewer earned runs, but 4-12 otherwise.

On the hitting side, Jerry Gonzales was a standout: he got on base in three of his four plate appearances with four stolen bases and two runs. He is becoming a predictor of Oxnard's success: when he posts at least two runs the team is undefeated (and 5-13 when he doesn't). The team also got some help courtesy of Carlos Rodriguez, who went 2-for-4 with one stolen base, one run, and one double.

Oxnard always had someone on base and finished the game having posted an OBP of .529. They are a perfect 4-0 when they post an OBP of .513 or better.

Oxnard's win bumped their record up to 8-13. As for Village Christian, they have been struggling recently as they've lost seven of their last eight matches. That's put a noticeable dent in their 9-9 record this season.

The teams didn't have to wait long for a rematch: Oxnard beat Village Christian by a score of 2-0 on Thursday.
