Lake Zurich and Mundelein are an even 5-5 against one another since May of 2018, but likely not for long. The Bears will take on the Mustangs at 4:45 p.m. on Wednesday. Both squads will be entering this one on the heels of a big victory.
On Monday, Lake Zurich got the win against Zion-Benton by a conclusive 12-3. The win continues a trend for the Bears in their matchups with the Zee-Bees: they've now won six in a row.
Izzy Vodicka was incredible, going a perfect 4-for-4 with four runs, two triples, and three RBI. That's the most hits she has posted since back in May of 2024. Brianna Rubicz also deserves some recognition as she snagged her first stolen base of the season.
They weren't the only ones making solid contact: Lake Zurich kept the outfield on their toes and finished the game with 16 hits. That's the most hits they've managed all season.
Meanwhile, Mundelein gave up the first runs on Monday, but they didn't let that get them down. They were the clear victors by a 10-3 margin over Warren Township. The victory made it back-to-back wins for the Mustangs.
Sophia Zepeda spent all seven innings on the mound, and it's clear why: she surrendered three earned runs on seven hits and racked up six Ks. She has been nothing but reliable: she hasn't tossed less than six strikeouts in four consecutive appearances.
On the hitting side, Mundelein let Claire Connelly and Emily Courtney run wild. Connelly went 3-for-4 with two runs, one stolen base, and two RBI, while Courtney went 1-for-3 with two stolen bases, three RBI, and one run. Courtney has been hot recently, having posted at least one stolen base the last three times she's played. The team also got some help courtesy of Kieley Tomas, who went 3-for-4 with two runs and one stolen base.
Lake Zurich's record is now 12-14-1. As for Mundelein, their record now sits at 16-7.
Lake Zurich beat Mundelein 9-6 in their previous meeting back in April. The rematch might be a little tougher for the Bears since the squad won't have the home-field advantage this time around. We'll see if the change in venue makes a difference.
