Basketball Game Preview: Mourning Sharks vs. Mater Lakes Academy Bears

The Mourning Sharks will take on the Mater Lakes Academy Bears on Thursday.

Mourning lost 39-17 to North Miami Beach on Thursday. The Sharks have struggled against the Chargers recently, as the game was their ninth consecutive lost matchup.

Even though the team lost, they still had their share of impressive performances. One of the best came from Makayla Dorvil, who posted nine points. That was a full 52.9% of Mourning's points, marking the third time in a row she's scored more than a third of the team's points.

Meanwhile, Mater Lakes Academy had already won two in a row (a stretch where they outscored their opponents by an average of 7 points) and they went ahead and made it three on Thursday. They blew past the Warriors 71-46. The Bears have made a habit of sweeping their opponents off the court, having now won nine matchups by 22 points or more this season.

Mater Lakes Academy found their leader in sophomore Vanessa Vancott, who dropped a double-double on 38 points and 18 rebounds. Vancott's evening made it 22 games in a row in which she has scored at least ten points. The team also got some help courtesy of Lorena Fernandez, who went 6 of 15 on her way to 16 points and four blocks.

Mourning's loss dropped their record down to 2-11. As for Mater Lakes Academy, they are on a roll lately: they've won five of their last six contests, which provided a nice bump to their 17-8 record this season.
