Basketball Recap: Kimball Anderson's Big Game Can't Quite Lead Bayfield over Montezuma-Cortez

Bayfield lost against Montezuma-Cortez back in January of 2024 and unfortunately they wound up with the same result on Saturday. The Bayfield Wolverines took a 53-41 hit to the loss column at the hands of the Montezuma-Cortez Panthers. The Wolverines have now taken an 'L' in back-to-back games.

Bayfield lost despite a true team effort on offense. The best among them was Kimball Anderson, who posted nine points in addition to six steals and five boards. What's more, she also posted a 31% field goal percentage, which is the highest she's posted since back in January of 2024. Sylvia Hesford was another key player, putting up four points and 19 rebounds.

Even though they lost, Bayfield smashed the offensive glass and finished the game with 26 offensive rebounds. They pulled down nine more offensive boards than Montezuma-Cortez's also-impressive total of 17.

Among those leading the charge was Taylor Whited, who had 20 points along with five assists and three steals. That makes it five consecutive games in which she has scored at least a third of Montezuma-Cortez's points. Another player making a difference was Abigale Baker, who earned four points and four steals.

Bayfield's defeat dropped their record down to 5-11. As for Montezuma-Cortez, their victory was their first in the league, bumping their league record up to 1-5 and their overall record up to 4-11.

Bayfield has already played their next game, a 59-16 loss against Alamosa on the 7th. As for Montezuma-Cortez, they also didn't take long to hit the court again: they've already played their next matchup, a 66-29 defeat against Centauri on the 7th.
