Basketball Game Preview: Newport Cubs vs. Stayton Eagles

Newport is 2-8 against Stayton since May of 2021 but they'll have a chance to close the gap a little bit on Tuesday. The Newport Cubs will head out on the road to face off against the Stayton Eagles at 5:30 p.m. Keep an eye on the score for this one: the two teams posted some lofty point totals in their previous games.

Last Tuesday, Newport beat North Marion 72-62.

Meanwhile, Stayton was fully in charge on Friday, breezing past Sweet Home 65-31. Given the Eagles' advantage in MaxPreps' Oregon basketball rankings (they are ranked 63rd, while the Huskies are ranked 211th), the result wasn't entirely unexpected.

Newport is on a roll lately: they've won seven of their last nine matches, which provided a nice bump to their 13-6 record this season. As for Stayton, their victory bumped their record up to 12-8.

Everything came up roses for Newport against Stayton when the teams last played back in January, as the squad secured a 61-34 win. The rematch might be a little tougher for Newport since the team won't have the home-court advantage this time around. We'll see if the change in venue makes a difference.
