Basketball Recap: Madison Garrido Leads a Balanced Attack to Beat Spartanburg

There's no place like home for Riverside, who bounced back after a loss on the road last Thursday. They walked away with a 65-52 victory over the Spartanburg Vikings on Friday. Given the Warriors' advantage in MaxPreps' South Carolina basketball rankings (they are ranked 28th, while the Vikings are ranked 88th), the result wasn't entirely unexpected.

Riverside's success was the result of a balanced attack that saw several players step up, but Madison Garrido led the charge by almost dropping a double-double on 17 points and nine rebounds. Garrido has been hot for a while, having also posted two or more steals the last 18 times she's played. Elly Trickett was another key player, dropping a double-double on 13 points and 11 boards.

Riverside smashed the offensive glass and finished the game with 29 offensive boards. That's the most offensive rebounds they've managed all season.

When it comes to explaining why Spartanburg lost, don't look at Kamryn Sainvil. Despite the final result, she went 11 of 17 on her way to 29 points. The dominant performance gave Sainvil a new career-high in points. Another player making a difference was Kaylee Nelson, who posted eight points and six rebounds.

Riverside's win bumped their record up to 13-6. As for Spartanburg, they dropped their record down to 8-10 with the defeat, which was their fifth straight on the road dating back to last season.

Riverside will challenge Dorman at 6:00 p.m. on Tuesday. One thing working in Dorman's favor is that they have posted at least 55 points in their last eight matchups. As for Spartanburg, they will square off against Boiling Springs at 6:00 p.m. on Tuesday. Spartanburg is facing Boiling Springs at the right time seeing as Boiling Springs is stuck on a four-game losing streak.
