Preview: Greenwich Cardinals vs. West Haven Blue Devils
Greenwich has enjoyed the comforts of home their last three games, but now they'll head out on the road. They will take on the West Haven Blue Devils at 12:30 p.m. on Sunday. Both teams come into the match bolstered by wins in their previous matches.
With a playoff game on the line, Greenwich rose to the challenge on Tuesday. They put the hurt on the Black Knights with a sharp 47-21 win. The result was nothing new for Greenwich, who have now won five matches by 26 points or more so far this season.
Multiple players turned in solid performances to lead Greenwich to victory, but perhaps none more so than Rocco Grillo, who threw for 348 yards and three touchdowns while completing 71.4% of his passes, and also punched in a touchdown on the ground. Ian Kim was in the mix as well, providing Greenwich with two touchdowns.
Meanwhile, West Haven didn't have too much trouble with New Britain at home on Tuesday as they won 28-14. Given West Haven's advantage in MaxPreps' Connecticut football rankings (they are ranked sixth, while New Britain is ranked 47th), the result wasn't entirely unexpected.
West Haven's success was the result of a balanced attack that saw several players step up, but Camren Kemp led the charge by rushing for 167 yards and a touchdown on only 14 carries. Kemp was no stranger to the big play, turning on the jets for a run that went for 56 yards. Another player making a difference was Armani Reid, who picked up 132 receiving yards and two touchdowns.
Staples' victory bumped their season record to 0-0 while Greenwich's defeat dropped theirs to 9-1.
Greenwich came up short against West Haven in their previous matchup back in September of 2014, falling 35-22. Can Greenwich avenge their loss or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
