Baseball Recap: Mead Takes a Loss

Mead extended their losing streak to four on Saturday, dropping them down to 12-11. They lost 8-1 to the Broomfield Eagles. For those keeping track at home, that's the biggest defeat the Mavericks have suffered since March 14, 2025.

Mead got a good showing from Isaac Lockwood, who tossed three innings while giving up no earned runs off four hits. The Mavericks are 4-2 when Lockwood allows two or fewer earned runs, but 8-9 otherwise.

As for Broomfield, the win was the 16th in a row for them, bringing their record up to 20-3. Those victories came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 10.3 runs over those games.

On Broomfield's side, James Varela made a big impact while hitting and pitching. He tossed two innings while giving up no earned runs or hits. Varela has been consistent recently: he hasn't given up more than two hits in four consecutive appearances. He was also solid in the batter's box, going 2-for-3 with two doubles, one run, and one RBI. Those two doubles gave him a new career-high.

In other pitching news, Broomfield gave Carter Uran the start and clearly made the right call: he didn't allow a single earned run over four innings pitched. Uran has been nothing but reliable on the mound: he hasn't given up more than two walks in eight consecutive appearances.

Back at the plate, the team relied heavily on Owen Lee, who fired off two home runs and four RBI while going 2-for-4. Those four RBI gave him a new career-high. The team also got some help courtesy of JR Ramsey, who went 2-for-4 with one stolen base, one run, and one double.

As of now, neither Mead nor Broomfield have any future games scheduled.
