Basketball Recap: Berean Academy Comes Up Short

Berean Academy was the 55-44 winner over BASIS - Mesa when they last played one another back in January, but their luck changed this time around. The contest between the Eagles and BASIS - Mesa didn't end well, with the Eagles falling 67-51.

When it comes to explaining why Berean Academy lost on Wednesday, don't look at Elijah Morris. Despite the final result, he shot 65% from the field on his way to 28 points and eight rebounds. Morris is on a roll when it comes to field goal percentage, as he's posted one of at least 65% in the last five games he's played dating back to last season. Another player making a difference was Caden Tanabe, who dropped a double-double with 15 points and 18 boards.

Omari Hester had another great game (as he tends to do), going 6-for-10 from beyond the arc to rack up 28 points for BASIS - Mesa. What's more, Hester also posted a 60% three-point shooting accuracy, which is the highest he's achieved since back in December of 2024. Kayden Karuri also deserves some recognition as he posted his first assist of the season.

Berean Academy's defeat dropped their record down to 0-2. As for BASIS - Mesa, the victory made it two in a row for them and bumps their season record up to 4-1.

Berean Academy and BASIS - Mesa will both get a bit of extra prep time before their next games. The next time the Eagles see the court they'll take on Arizona Cultural Academy at 7:30 p.m. on January 7, 2026. As for BASIS - Mesa, their break will end when they face 91st Psalm Christian School at 6:30 p.m. on January 6, 2026.
