Baseball Recap: Messalonskee Wins Going Away Against Mt. Blue

It's playoff time, and Messalonskee had no trouble coming through when it counted. They blew past the Mt. Blue Cougars 11-3 on Thursday. That's the third time they've managed to beat them this season, with their most recent win being a 5-2 victory two weeks ago.

Dennis Martin made a big impact while hitting and pitching. He tossed seven innings while giving up just two earned (and one unearned) runs off seven hits. Martin was also solid in the batter's box, going 2-for-5 with one run and one double.

In other batting news, the team relied heavily on Ty Bernier, who got on base in four of his five plate appearances with one home run and two runs. He is becoming a predictor of Messalonskee's success: when he posts at least two runs the team is 5-1 (and 5-6 when he doesn't). Another player making a difference was Dagen Gooding, who got on base in three of his four plate appearances with two runs, one stolen base, and one RBI.

The win made it two in a row for Messalonskee and bumps their season record up to 10-7. The victories came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 10.5 runs over those games. As for Mt. Blue, their loss dropped their record down to 11-6.

As of now, neither Messalonskee nor the Cougars have any future games scheduled.
