Basketball Game Preview: Doherty Spartans vs. Rock Canyon Jaguars

Doherty is a perfect 3-0 against Rock Canyon since December of 2014 and they'll have a chance to extend that dominance on Saturday. The Doherty Spartans will challenge the Rock Canyon Jaguars at 7:00 p.m. Both teams took a loss in their last game, so they'll have plenty of motivation to get the 'W'.

Doherty is coming in fresh off a high-stakes matchup with another one of Colorado's top teams: Pine Creek, who was ranked seventh at the time (Doherty was ranked 21st). Doherty was dealt a 66-35 loss at the hands of Pine Creek on Thursday. The defeat continues a trend for the Spartans in their matchups with the Eagles: they've now lost four in a row.

Despite their loss, Doherty saw several players rise to the challenge and make noteworthy plays. Cora Wheaton, who posted ten points, was perhaps the best of all. The team also got some help courtesy of Payton Cordova, who earned six points.

Meanwhile, Rock Canyon fought the good fight in their overtime match against Regis Jesuit on Friday but wound up with a less-than-desirable result. They fell just short of the Raiders by a score of 56-54. For those keeping track at home, that's the closest defeat the Jaguars have suffered since December 8, 2023.

The match pitted two dominant guards against one another in Brooke Harding and Iliana Greene. Greene had a great game and to rack up 24 points. Meanwhile, Harding did her best for the losing side, putting up 11 points and three blocks.

Doherty's loss dropped their record down to 17-6. As for Rock Canyon, their defeat ended a five-game streak of wins at home and dropped them to 13-9.

Doherty won a game that couldn't have been any closer in their previous matchup back in January, slipping by Rock Canyon 48-47. One of the biggest obstacles the team faced in that game was Harding, who en route to 16 points along with five boards and four steals. Now that she's got a second chance to win this matchup, will Doherty still be able to contain Harding? There's only one way to find out.
