Softball Recap: Sandia's Losing Streak Is a Thing of the Past

After having lost a blowout in their previous game against Cibola, Sandia was happy to have turned things around on Thursday. They walked away with a 10-6 victory over the Albuquerque Bulldogs. Considering the Matadors' hitters had been struggling lately, the high-scoring outing was a much-needed turnaround.

Liliana Villanueva made a big impact while hitting and pitching. She looked comfortable on the mound, striking out six batters over six innings while giving up just two earned (and four unearned) runs off five hits (and only one walk). Those hits marked the first that she allowed this season. She was also big at the plate, scoring a run while going 1-for-3.

In other batting news, the team relied heavily on Lola Valentin, who scored a run while going 4-for-4. She also brought in three RBI, marking her first of the season. Another player making a difference was Destiny Romero, who scored two runs while going 2-for-3.

Sandia always had someone on base and finished the game having posted an OBP of .552. The last time their OBP was this high was back in April of 2024.

The win snapped Sandia's losing streak at four games dating back to last season and leaves them with a 1-3 record. As for Albuquerque, this is the second loss in a row for them and nudges their season record down to 3-3.

Sandia has already played their next matchup, a 19-1 victory against Bloomfield on the 14th. As for Albuquerque, they also wasted no time getting back out on the field and have already played their next contest, a 16-1 win against Espanola Valley on the 14th.
