Flag Football Recap: Rio Mesa Skates Past Santa Barbara with Ease

After low-scoring totals in their previous four contest, Rio Mesa brought some dynamite into their most recent game. They claimed a resounding 39-12 victory over the Santa Barbara Dons. The win was a breath of fresh air for the Spartans as it put an end to their four-game losing streak.

Rio Mesa got their victory on the backs of several key players, but it was Jadeline Gonzalez out in front who threw for 160 yards and five TDs. That's the most passing touchdowns Gonzalez has posted since back in August. Nona Moreno was Gonzalez's top target, picking up 62 receiving yards and a pair of touchdowns.

Rio Mesa didn't go easy on the quarterback and picked off three passes before the game was over. It was truly a group effort as Analysia Brewer, Sarah Briones, and Moreno picked up one apiece. Rio Mesa got some further help from Saniya Holloway: she picked up a sack and made eight total tackles.

Rio Mesa's win was their first in the league, bumping their league record up to 1-9 and their overall record up to 7-12. As for Santa Barbara, they have been struggling recently as they've lost six of their last seven matchups. That's put a noticeable dent in their 6-11 record this season.

We've got plenty of inter-league action coming up soon. Rio Mesa is set to take on their familiar foe San Marcos at 6:30 p.m. on Friday. Meanwhile, Santa Barbara will square off against rival Oxnard at 7:00 p.m. on Thursday.
