Basketball Recap: Coffee Comes Up Short

Coffee lost against Veterans back in January and unfortunately they wound up with the same result on Tuesday. The Coffee Trojans lost to the Veterans Warhawks at home by a 78-63 margin. While losing is never fun, the Trojans can't take it too hard given the team's big disadvantage in MaxPreps' Georgia basketball rankings (they are ranked 400th, while the Warhawks are ranked 139th).

Despite the defeat, Coffee saw an underclassman step up: sophomore Tresean Smith dropped a double-double on 13 points and ten boards. Those ten rebounds set a new season-high mark for Smith. Jerimyha Perry was another key player, going 6 for 12 on his way to 13 points.

Even though they lost, Coffee was working as a unit and finished the game with 22 assists. That's the most assists they've posted since the start of last season.

Veterans had a senior duo take command as Aiden Sweenor went 9 of 17 en route to 25 points and Tristen Abner dropped a double-double on 17 points and ten boards. Abner is on a roll when it comes to rebounds, as he's now pulled down nine or more in the last seven games he's played. Another player making a difference was Jordan Watson, who posted ten points.

Coffee dropped their record down to 4-16 with the loss, which was their fourth straight at home. That patch can't be blamed on the team's offensive performance across that stretch, as they averaged 56.0 points per game. As for Veterans, they are on a roll lately: they've won four of their last five matchups, which provided a nice bump to their 13-8 record this season.

Coffee has already played their next contest, a 69-56 defeat against Northside on the 31st. As for Veterans, they also wasted no time getting back out on the court and have already played their next game, a 67-62 loss against Thomas County Central on the 31st.
