Basketball Recap: Nash Hostetter's Big Game Can't Quite Lead Mt. Vernon over Evansville Mater Dei

Mt. Vernon lost against Evansville Mater Dei back in February of 2024, and unfortunately they wound up with the same result on Wednesday. Mt. Vernon took a 48-44 hit to the loss column at the hands of Evansville Mater Dei. While Mt. Vernon didn't get the win, they did start the game off strong, beating Evansville Mater Dei 12-7 in the first quarter.

Several Wildcats players turned in solid performances despite ultimately coming up short. Perhaps the best among those players was Nash Hostetter, who posted 14 points in addition to six assists and six rebounds. Hostetter is also on a roll when it comes to steals, as he's now grabbed two or more in each of the last four games he's played. Brady Schickel was another key player, shooting 83% from the field on his way to 13 points and five boards.

Evansville Mater Dei's success was the result of a balanced attack that saw several players step up, but Cole Breeden led the charge by dropping a double-double with 12 points and 14 rebounds. The dominant performance gave Breeden a new career-high in boards. Another player making a difference was Tate Mallory, who went 6-for-11 en route to 14 points and five rebounds.

Mt. Vernon now has a losing record of 11-12. As for Evansville Mater Dei, their win bumped their record up to 5-15.

Mt. Vernon wasted no time getting back out on the court and has already played their next matchup, a 65-64 victory against South Spencer on the 27th. As for Evansville Mater Dei, they also didn't take long to hit the court again: they've already played their next game, a 49-45 defeat against Northeast Dubois on the 28th.
