Basketball Recap: Economedes Comes Up Short

Economedes lost against La Joya back in January and unfortunately they wound up with the same result on Friday. The Economedes Jaguars were beaten by the La Joya Coyotes 50-23. The Jaguars have now taken an 'L' in back-to-back games.

Alessey Rodriguez and Yazmin Ayala certainly did their best on Friday to avoid the loss. Rodriguez posted five points and ten boards, while Ayala had four points. Rodriguez is on a roll when it comes to rebounds, as she's now pulled down nine or more in the last three games she's played.

Even though they lost, Economedes smashed the offensive glass and finished the game with 15 offensive rebounds. That's the most offensive boards they've posted since back in November of 2024.

La Joya found their leader in freshman Debany Garza, who went 5 of 12 en route to 19 points in addition to seven boards and three steals. Another player making a difference was Brianna Reyna, who went 5 for 11 on her way to 12 points and three steals.

Economedes' record is now 9-17. As for La Joya, their victory was their third straight at home, which pushed their record up to 15-19.

A feisty cat fight is on tap when the Economedes Jaguars face off against the Weslaco Panthers at 6:00 p.m. on Tuesday. Weslaco will roll in looking for their sixth straight win, something Economedes surely won't give up without a fight. As for La Joya, they will head out on the road to challenge Pharr-San Juan-Alamo at 6:00 p.m. on Tuesday. La Joya is facing Pharr-San Juan-Alamo at the right time seeing as Pharr-San Juan-Alamo is stuck on a seven-game losing streak.
