Baseball Recap: Aiken Drops Season-High Score on Midland Valley

Winning is always nice, but doing so behind a season-high score is even better (just ask Aiken). They were the clear victors by an 8-1 margin over the Midland Valley Mustangs on Tuesday. The Fighting Green Hornets not only won on Tuesday, but they posted their biggest win since April 25, 2024.

Cole Harmon was a major factor no matter where he played. On the mound, he didn't allow a single earned run while striking out nine over six innings pitched. He also tossed no earned runs, which is notable because Aiken is 2-1 when he allows at most one earned run, but 5-6 otherwise. Harmon was also big at the plate, scoring three runs and stealing a base while going 1-for-3. Those three runs gave him a new career-high.

In other pitching news, Lane Holley looked comfortable as he tossed one inning while giving up no earned runs or hits. He is becoming a predictor of Aiken's success: when he allows at most one hit the team is 2-1 (and 5-6 when he doesn't).

Back at the plate, Gray Kitchings was excellent, scoring a run and stealing a base while going 2-for-4. The dominant performance also gave him a new career-high in RBI (three). Spencer Johnson was another key player, going 3-for-4 with two RBI.

Aiken kept the outfield on their toes and finished the game with 11 hits. They are a perfect 4-0 when they post 11 or more hits.

The victory (which was Aiken's third in a row) raised their record to 7-7. The wins came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 1.0 run on average over those games. As for Midland Valley, they are on a nine-game losing streak that has dropped them down to 2-10-1.

Aiken will have a chance to go back-to-back against the Mustangs: the pair's next game is a rematch scheduled at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday.
