Softball Recap: West Panthers vs. Brighton Bengals

After having lost a blowout in their previous game against Ridgeline, West was happy to have turned things around on Tuesday. They walked away with a 7-3 victory over the Brighton Bengals. This was a revenge contest for West, as the team was forced to settle for a 13-3 defeat when these two played last Monday.

Janayah Young spent all seven innings on the mound, and it's clear why: she surrendered three runs (all of which were unearned) on four hits and racked up six Ks.

At the plate, Jayda Spight was incredible, going 4-for-4 with three runs, three RBI, and a triple. Josephine Gasu was another key contributor, scoring a run while going 1-for-3.

On Brighton's side, Alison Nikolaus put in work no matter where she played. On the mound, she struck out 11 batters over seven innings while giving up four earned (and three unearned) runs off eight hits. Nikolaus has been nothing but reliable: she hasn't pitched less than five innings in four consecutive pitching appearances. Nikolaus was also solid in the batter's box, going 2-for-3 with a triple, a double, and an RBI.

In other batting news, Dalila Romero was cooking despite her team's loss, scoring two runs and stealing a base while getting on base in three of her four plate appearances. She is on a roll when it comes to stolen bases, as she's now stolen at least one in the last five games she's played. Another player making a difference was Audrey Fleckenstein, who scored a run and stole a base while going 1-for-4.

Even though they lost, Brighton didn't let batters stay on the plate for long and finished the game with 11 strikeouts. They easily outclassed their opponents in that department as West only tossed six.

West is on a roll lately: they've won three of their last four matches, which provided a nice bump to their 8-6 record this season. As for Brighton, their record now sits at 9-13.
