Basketball Recap: Izzy Stehno's Big Game Can't Quite Lead Wauneta-Palisade over Garden County

Wauneta-Palisade was the 55-39 winner over Garden County when they last played one another back in January of 2023, but their luck changed this time around. The Wauneta-Palisade Broncos fell to the Garden County Eagles 35-31. The matchup marked the Broncos' lowest-scoring contest so far this season.

Wauneta-Palisade lost on Saturday despite a true team effort on offense, the best among them being Izzy Stehno, who posted five points in addition to 13 rebounds and seven steals. Stehno has been hot recently, having posted two or more steals the last four times she's played. Another player making a difference was Mesa Cox, who earned eight points along with six boards and three steals.

Even though they lost, Wauneta-Palisade smashed the offensive glass and finished the game with 14 offensive boards. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now pulled down at least eight offensive rebounds in 14 consecutive games dating back to last season.

Multiple players turned in solid performances to lead Garden County to victory, but perhaps none more so than Kelney Dehning, who put up nine points and six steals. Ridglyn Stanczyk was another key player, putting up five points and nine rebounds.

Wauneta-Palisade has been struggling recently as they've lost five of their last six contests, which put a noticeable dent in their 5-8 record this season. As for Garden County, the win made it two in a row for them and bumps their season record up to 4-6.
