Baseball Recap: Mercer County Titans vs. Somerset Briar Jumpers

Mercer County's hitters rose to the challenge against a Briar Jumpers pitching crew that boasted an average of only 4.09 points allowed on Saturday. The Mercer County Titans blew past the Somerset Briar Jumpers 12-2. That result was just more of the same for these two, as Mercer County also won the last time the pair played back in March of 2023.

Mercer County got a great performance from Aaron May as he tossed five innings while giving up just one earned (and one unearned) run off five hits.

At the plate, Carter Devine was incredible, scoring four runs and stealing five bases while getting on base in all four of his plate appearances. He has been hot recently, having posted at least one stolen base the last four times he's played. Another player making a difference was Andrew Tatum, who scored three runs and stole three bases while getting on base in three of his four plate appearances.

On Somerset's side, they saw four different players step up and record at least one hit. One of them was Cayden Cimala, who went 2-for-3 with a stolen base.

Even though they lost, Somerset hit smart and finished the game with only two strikeouts. This was only their first loss (out of four games) when they post two or more strikeouts.

Mercer County's victory bumped their record up to 14-11. As for Somerset, their loss dropped their record down to 15-8.

Both squads will have to hit the road in their upcoming games. Mercer County will face off against Southwestern at 6:00 p.m. on Thursday. As for Somerset, they will head out on the road to square off against Pulaski County at 6:00 p.m. on Monday. Pulaski County is coming into the contest with five straight wins at home, so Somerset will have to stop a team with plenty of momentum.
