Softball Recap: Martins Ferry Purple Riders vs. Claymont Mustangs

Martins Ferry's tournament run continued when they took on Claymont on Wednesday. The Purple Riders sure made it a nail-biter, but they managed to escape with a 5-4 victory over the Mustangs.

Maddie Lucas made a big impact no matter where she played. On the mound, she struck out nine batters over seven innings while giving up three earned (and one unearned) runs off eight hits. She has been consistent for a while: she hasn't given up more than two walks in ten consecutive appearances. She was also stellar in the batter's box, going 2-for-4 with one home run, two runs, and one stolen base. That's the most runs she has posted since back in April.

Lucas wasn't the only one making solid contact as two players wound up with at least one hit. One of them was Giana Chirpas, who went 1-for-3 with one double and one RBI. Gracie Lucas was another, getting on base in two of her four plate appearances with one run and one RBI.

Martins Ferry's win bumped their record up to 23-4. As for Claymont, their loss dropped their record down to 15-10.
