Baseball Recap: Gilbert Has No Trouble Against Mesa

Gilbert had to skate by with only a one-run margin when they last took the field, which might have inspired the ten-run drubbing they dealt Mesa on Monday. Gilbert was the clear victor by a 12-2 margin over Mesa. The Tigers haven't had any issues with the Jackrabbits recently, as the game was their third consecutive win against them.

Wilfredo Aviles IV made a splash no matter where he played. He looked comfortable on the mound, tossing four innings while giving up just one earned run off six hits. The dominant performance also gave him a new career-high in strikeouts (four). He was also big at the plate, scoring a run while getting on base in three of his four plate appearances.

In other batting news, Grant Goodman was incredible, getting on base in three of his four plate appearances with one home run, three runs, and two RBI. He has become a key player for Gilbert: the team is undefeated when he posts at least two runs, but 4-9 otherwise. Parker Sorge also deserves some recognition as he scored his first run of the season.

Gilbert always had someone on base and finished the game having posted an OBP of .562. They easily outclassed their opponents in that department as Mesa only posted an OBP of .375.

Gilbert's record now sits at 7-9. As for Mesa, they have traveled a rocky road recently, having lost eight of their last nine matches. That's put a noticeable dent in their 2-12 record this season.

Gilbert and Mesa could both be facing uphill battles in their next games considering their disadvantage in the MaxPreps Arizona Rankings. Gilbert (ranked 88th) will meet Williams Field (ranked 21st) at 6:00 p.m. on Tuesday. Meanwhile, Mesa will take on Red Mountain at 3:45 p.m. on Tuesday down 169 places (177 vs. 8).
