Basketball Recap: Koliganek Comes Up Short

Koliganek managed to slip by Manokotak the last time these teams faced off, but didn't have those same answers this time around. The Koliganek Huskies took a blow against the Manokotak Lynx on Saturday, falling 74-41. While losing is never fun, the Huskies can't take it too hard given the team's big disadvantage in MaxPreps' Alaska basketball rankings (they are ranked 46th, while the Lynx are ranked sixth).

Koliganek's loss shouldn't obscure the performances of Andy Andrew, who posted 18 points, and Gusty Tunguing IV, who earned 14 points. The game was Andrew's third in a row with at least 18 points.

It was another big night for Jethron Nanalook, who put up 42 points for Manokotak. That makes it three consecutive games in which Nanalook has scored at least a third of Manokotak's points. Another player making a difference was Nevaeh Gloko, who scored ten points.

The defeat snapped Koliganek's winning streak at five games and leaves them with a 9-4 record. Those victories came thanks in part to their offensive performance across that stretch, as they averaged 70.8 points over those games. As for Manokotak, the win (which was their 14th in a row) raised their record to 14-1.

Koliganek has already played their next contest, a 66-57 victory against Chief Ivan Blunka on the 22nd. As for Manokotak, they also didn't take long to hit the court again: they've already played their next match, a 78-38 win against Koliganek on the 22nd.
