Basketball Recap: West Comes Up Short

West lost against Shawnee Heights back in December of 2024 and unfortunately they wound up with the same result on Friday. The West Chargers were beaten by the Shawnee Heights Thunderbirds 67-39. While losing is never fun, the Chargers can't take it too hard given the team's big disadvantage in MaxPreps' Kansas basketball rankings (they are ranked 250th, while the Thunderbirds are ranked 117th).

West's loss came despite strong showings from Imani McGlory and Sydney VanDyke. McGlory posted 19 points and three steals, while VanDyke had two points along with 18 boards, six blocks, and three steals. With that strong performance, VanDyke is now averaging an impressive 2.1 blocks per game.

Even though they lost, West smashed the offensive glass and finished the game with 11 offensive rebounds. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now pulled down at least 11 offensive boards in six consecutive games.

West dropped their record down to 1-8 with the loss, which was their sixth straight on the road dating back to last season. As for Shawnee Heights, they now have a winning record of 5-4-1.

West didn't take long to hit the court again: they've already played their next matchup, a 52-45 victory against Highland Park on the 30th. As for Shawnee Heights, they also wasted no time getting back out on the court and have already played their next contest, a 54-47 win against Blue Valley on the 30th.
