Football Recap: Owen Smith's Big Game Can't Quite Lead Sullivan over Cumberland

If Sullivan was riding high fresh off their 47-6 takedown of Tri-County [Kansas/Shiloh/Oakland] last Friday, their most recent game may have dampened their spirits a bit. The Redskins took a hard 35-21 fall against the Cumberland Pirates on Saturday.

Several Redskins players turned in solid performances despite ultimately coming up short. Perhaps the best among those players was Owen Smith, who threw for 172 yards and two touchdowns on only 13 passes. Sullivan also got a significant boost from Aiden Dinger, who ran away from the competition to the tune of 116 yards.

Sullivan didn't go easy on the quarterback and picked off two passes before the game was over. In fact, those interceptions all came courtesy of defensive juggernaut Dinger.

Sullivan's defeat dropped their record down to 5-2. As for Cumberland, the victory (which was their fifth in a row) raised their record to 7-1.

We've got plenty of inter-conference action coming up soon. Sullivan is set to face off against their familiar foe Villa Grove at 7:00 p.m. on Friday. Meanwhile, Cumberland will challenge rival Nokomis at 7:00 p.m. on Friday.
