Softball Recap: Prep Charter Huskies vs. Nueva Esperanza

Prep Charter extended their losing streak to three on Thursday, dropping them down to 2-4-1. They lost 17-11 to Nueva Esperanza. The Huskies were given a dose of their own medicine in this game as Nueva Esperanza apparently hadn't forgotten their loss the last time these teams played back in April of 2019.

As for Nueva Esperanza, the win (which was their sixth in a row) raised their record to 6-1. Those victories came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 19.3 runs over those games.

For Nueva Esperanza's part, Gyliani Ortiz was a major factor no matter where she played. On the mound, she struck out 15 batters over six innings while giving up five earned (and six unearned) runs off five hits. Ortiz has been nothing but reliable: she hasn't tossed less than seven strikeouts any time she's pitched this season. She was also stellar in the batter's box, getting on base in four of her five plate appearances with six stolen bases and three runs.

In other batting news, Nueva Esperanza got a massive performance out of Alesyn Lopez, who went a perfect 3-for-3 with four stolen bases, two runs, and one triple. Joneily Santana also deserves some recognition as she hit her first triple of the season.

Coming up, Prep Charter will venture away from home to take on Girard Academic Music Program at 3:15 p.m. on Tuesday. As for Nueva Esperanza, they will welcome Swenson Arts & Tech at 3:15 p.m. on Tuesday.
