Football Recap: Savoy Starts Season with Defeat at Home

Savoy unfortunately couldn't capitalize on their home-field advantage in their season opener. They took a 20-15 hit to the loss column at the hands of the Cornerstone Christian Academy Warriors on Friday. The result was an unpleasant reminder to the Cardinals of the 1-0 loss they experienced in the pair's previous head-to-head fixture back in September of 2019.

Denver Perchez threw for 83 yards and one touchdown. Rawlee Gibson was his top target, picking up 52 receiving yards. On the ground, Timothy Relford rushed for 63 yards.

A big part of Cornerstone Christian Academy's victory came down to the chemistry between Boaz Van Roekel and his top target Ben Glushko. Van Roekel rushed for 93 yards and one TD while Glushko picked up 74 receiving yards and a pair of scores. Van Roekel didn't just play on offense: he also made 14 total tackles and defended two passes.

Both squads will have to hit the road in their upcoming games. Savoy is packing up and heading out for their first away game of the season: they will face off against Fannindel at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday. As for Cornerstone Christian Academy, they will head out to challenge Grayson Christian at 6:00 p.m. on Thursday.
