Baseball Preview: Layton Lancers vs. Riverton Silverwolves

The Layton Lancers will face off against the Riverton Silverwolves at 12:00 p.m. on Monday. Both come into the contest bolstered by wins in their previous matches.

On Saturday, Layton needed a bit of extra time to put away West Ranch. They had just enough and edged out the Wildcats 7-6. The Lancers' hitters stepped up their game for this one, as that was the most runs they've scored all season.

Kaleb Hall tossed a big game, tossing five innings while giving up just one earned (and one unearned) run off three hits.

On the hitting side, Andres Cedeno was excellent, going 1-for-5 with one triple, one stolen base, and two RBI. That's the most RBI he has posted since back in April of 2024. Tanner Neil also deserves some recognition as he scored his first runs of the season.

Meanwhile, Riverton got the win against Bountiful on Thursday by a conclusive 14-1. The result was nothing new for the Silverwolves, who have now won four matchups by ten runs or more so far this season.

McKay Linford looked comfortable as he tossed three innings while giving up no earned runs off one hit. He has been nothing but reliable on the mound: he hasn't given up more than two hits any time he's pitched this season.

At the plate, Riverton got a massive performance out of Bryce Mounteer, who went 3-for-4 with one home run, two stolen bases, and four RBI. McKade Ortiz was another key player, going a perfect 2-for-2 with one home run, three RBI, and two runs.

Riverton always had someone on base and finished the game having posted an OBP of .562. They easily outclassed their opponents in that department as Bountiful only posted an OBP of .278.

Riverton has been performing well recently as they've won four of their last five games. That's provided a nice bump to their 5-2 record this season. Those wins came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 13.0 runs over those games. Layton's first victory this season bumped their record up to 1-7.

Layton skirted past Riverton 6-4 when the teams last played back in March of 2024. Will Layton repeat their success, or does Riverton has a new game plan this time around? We'll find out soon enough.
