High school volleyball: MaxPreps Player of the Year in all 50 states

Each year since 2008, MaxPreps has recognized outstanding performers in high school volleyball. America's source for high school sports continues the tradition to close out the 2022 season by naming the top player in each state. Selections are based on team success and individual excellence, in addition to local and state accolades.

Representing the best of the best from all 50 states and Washington, D.C., MaxPreps Player of the Year honorees range from state champions, MaxPreps All-Americans and those who excelled in the stats sheet as well as in the team concept.

The players listed below include MaxPreps National Player of the Year Julia Blyashov, who led Cathedral Catholic to a MaxPreps National Championship as the Dons went 42-0 with a CIF Open Division title.

The captain of the Admirals 21st straight title dished up 1,479 assists and added 150 kills as Bayside went 48-14. She will look to add to her legacy and give Bayside a 32nd overall title in 2023.

Alaska — Jolee Kelzenberg, Dimond (Anchorage)
The Lynx's setter was fabulous all season with 742 assists and 297 kills as Dimond went 46-8 and won the 4A title. While Lauren Sulte also deserves a nod for the Lynx's success, Kelzenberg averaged 5.0 assists and 2.0 kills per set in 2022. She averaged nearly 20 assists per match as Dimon climbed out of the loser's bracket to avenge their postseason loss to West Anchorage in the state finals.

Arizona — Kierstyn Barton, Corona del Sol (Tempe)
The Washington commit pounded 467 kills with 373 digs as the Aztecs landed at No. 23 in the MaxPreps Top 25 after finishing 39-5 with an Arizona 6A title.

Arkansas — Kennedy Phelan, Fayetteville
Leaves the program as a three-time state champion with 977 assists this season as she helped the Bulldogs to a 36-2 record, 6A title and No. 5 rank. For her career, Phelan averaged 9.9 assists per set and 3,972 total. She also had 217 kills this season.

California — Julia Blyashov, Cathedral Catholic (San Diego)
The MaxPreps National Player of the Year led the Dons to an unbeaten season, CIF Open Division title and MaxPreps National Championship. The Stanford commit was Cathedral's catalyst for running the table against an aggressive national schedule that included tournament wins in Hawaii, Southern California and at the Durango Fall Classic.

Colorado — Chloe Elarton, Valor Christian (Highland Ranch)

The Eagles' setter notched 784 assists, 205 digs, 77 kills and 59 aces for the Colorado 5A champion. She tallied double-digit assists in all but two matches as Valor Christian went 29-0.

Connecticut — Ally Hadley, RHAM (Hebron)

The senior helped the Raptors to their ninth state title and was again named MVP in the state tournament — in 2021 she won it in the Class L and in Class M this season. In 2022, she led RHAM to a 27-5 record with 334 kills, 383 digs and 59 aces.

Delaware — Julia Yurkovich, St. Mark's (Wilmington)

The Spartans' standout ends her career short of winning her fourth state title, but added a third state player of the year honor. She finished with more than 800 career kills at St. Mark's went 17-2.

District of Columbia — Jada Aksu, Georgetown Day
The 6-foot sophomore led the Mighty Hoppers to the DCSAA title, pounding 15 kills in a 3-1 win over St. John's in the finals. She tallied 198 on the season as Gerogetown Day went 22-3.

Florida — Jalyn Stout, Santa Fe (Alachua)

The Raiders went 30-2 with a 3A title behind the hitting of Stout, a Coastal Carolina commit who dropped 563 and added 368 assists and 245 digs.

Georgia — Ashley Sturzoiu, Buford

Helped the Wolves to their third straight Georgia AAAAAAA title with a 38-5 mark and No. 10 finish in the MaxPreps Top 25. Sturzoiu pounded 487 kills while adding 302 digs as she hammered home the final kill to seal the crown for Buford.

Hawaii — Senna Roberts-Navarro, 'Iolani (Honolulu)
The Raiders' senior led the team with 394 kills on the season as they grabbed their fourth state title and first since 2018. Roberts-Navarro was part of a senior-heavy crew with Brooke Naniseni, Tessa Onaga and Maya Imoto-Eakin that went 25-5 and finished No. 11 in the final MaxPreps Top 25.

Idaho — Alex Acevedo, Skyview (Nampa)
The junior paced the Hawks with 286 kills (4.7 per set) as they grabbed the 4A title after winning the last two 5A crowns. The Oregon commit also shined on the national stage with 27 kills against Papillion-LaVista South and 15 against Ponte Vedra in the ESPN-televised GEICO High School Volleyball Invitational.



Illinois — Ellie White, Mother McAuley (Chicago)
An electrifying hitter, White had 542 kills, 289 digs, 103 blocks and was the go-to option whenever McAuley needed a sideout. She helped the Mighty Macs to a 4A title and 39-3 record.

Indiana — Chloe Chicoine, McCutcheon (Lafayette, Ind.)
The first recipient of the IHSVCA Indiana Miss Volleyball, pounded 549 kills this season, ending her storied career with 2,013. She hit at 47 percent for the 33-2 Mavericks, who fell short in their quest for back-to-back Indiana 4A titles.

Iowa — Payton Petersen, Dike-New Hartford (Dike)
The hard-hitting twin (her sister Jadyn is committed to Northern Iowa) hammered 515 kills with 298 digs, 51 blocks and 64 aces for the 45-3 Wolverines. A junior, she's headed to Louisville.

Kansas — Brooklyn DeLeye, Washburn Rural (Topeka)
Ends her career with a Kansas 6A title as the Blues went 45-1 and finished No. 12 in the final MaxPreps Top 25. DeLeye had 457 kills, 324 digs as the Blues dropped five sets all season and swept through the Sunflower State postseason. She finished with 2,090 career kills, which is third-best all-time in Kansas.

Kentucky — Whitney Woodrow, Assumption (Louisville)

Served up 1,395 assists for the Rockets, who lost their top hitter on the eve of the season. Undaunted, she helped six hitters pound more than 180 kills as Assumption went 34-8 against a tough national schedule.

Louisiana — Camryn Chatellier, St. Mary's Dominican (New Orleans)

The leading hitter on a team that captured its third straight Division I state title, Chatellier posted a team-best 402 kills with 32 blocks and 281 digs. She had 21 kills in the state finals win as St. Mary's Dominican went 36-3.

Maine — Charlotte Donovan, Biddeford
The softball player of the year in Maine as well, Donovan helped the Tigers on the court go unbeaten and win the state Class A title.

Maryland — Claire Thompson, Urbana (Ijamsville)
The senior helped the Hawks to a five-set state title win over Old Line State power Arundel, winning 15-11 in the fifth. Thompson led the Hawks with 10 kills in the title match.

Massachusetts — Anne-Sophie Ouellet, Lincoln-Sudbury (Sudbury)
The Warriors went 22-3 before falling to Newtown North in the Division 1 finals. Oullet posted 279 kills with 267 digs and 52 aces on the season. She finished her career with 600 kills.



Michigan — Ava Sarafa, Marian (Bloomfield Hills)
The catalyst for Marian's three-peat as Michigan Division 1 champions, Sarafa is only the 16th player in prep history to eclipse the 5,000-assist mark. The Kentucky commit had 1,359 assists (11.0 per set) as Marian went 49-1 and finished No. 3 in the final MaxPreps Top 25.

Minnesota — Stella Swenson, Wayzata (Plymouth)
The Trojans' setter joined twin sister Olivia in leading the team to a 30-4 record and repeat 4A title. The Minnesota commit led the team with 755 assists and added 117 kills (fifth on the team, while Olivia led the Trojans with 307) and 185 digs.

Mississippi — Lakin Laurendine, Jackson Academy (Jackson)
Averaged 4.9 kills per set as the Raiders went 40-5 and finished No. 47 in the country, winning the MAIS Division I title. Laurendine pounded 623 kills this season, hitting at 47 percent. She ends her high school years with 1,132 kills and 904 digs.

Missouri — Ella Swindle, Rock Bridge (Columbia)
The Texas commit led the Bruins to a 26-6 mark with 841 assists, 230 digs and 171 kills. She heads to Austin with 3,054 assists, 842 digs and 544 kills.

Montana — Rylee Kogolshak, Billings Senior (Billings)
A three-sport standout, she helped the 16-1 to the Broncs to the AA title this season. A first-team all-state selection and Eastern AA player of the year, she also won a state title in swimming in 2021 and took third at 170 in the state wrestling tournament.

Nebraska — Morgan Burke, Skutt Catholic (Omaha)
The MaxPreps All-American helped the Skyhawks to a 32-10 mark as they grabbed their eighth consecutive Class B state title. Her 505 kills are a single-season school mark. She added 430 digs and 66 aces, ending her prep career with 1,091 kills.

Nevada — Camdyn Carpenter, Coronado (Henderson)

The senior setter led the Cougars to a 5A title with 579 assists, 70 aces and 182 digs. Coronado went 29-5 against a national schedule as the Cougars defeated Shadow Ride, Palo Verde, Bishop Gorman, Bishop Manogue and Reno for the title. In those five matches, she averaged 22 assists per match.

New Hampshire — Lindsey Healey, Bedford
Though the Bulldogs were taken to a fifth set for the first time in three seasons, they held firm and captured a third straight title and kept their 50-match win streak alive. Healey had 24 kills in the state finals and was a first-team all-state pick.

New Jersey — Brookelyn Talmadge, Immaculate Heart Academy (Washington Township)

The Bryant commit led the Blue Eagles on a redemption tour this season, winning the New Jersey Non-Public A title one season after ending the school's 13-year championship run. IHA finished 29-1 as Talmadge dropped 323 kills (5.0 per set).



New Mexico — Ella Sanders, La Cueva (Albuquerque)
The Bears' senior standout led the squad with 401 kills as they ran the table in 2022 and bumped their win streak to 49 matches. La Cueva has won four titles in five seasons. In the finals, Sanders paced the Bears with 14 kills in the 3-1 win over Las Cruces.

New York — Julia Lawrence, Calhoun (Merrick)
The Class A tournament MVP led the Colts to their first New York state title. She had 238 kills, 42 aces and 174 digs on the season as Calhoun went 15-5.

North Carolina — Laney Choboy, Leesville Road (Raleigh)

She'll be a libero at Nebraska, but for the Pride she did everything this season. Playing outside-hitter, the six-rotation player averaged 3.6 kills per set in 2022 with 4.3 digs. She had 206 kills and 244 digs in her senior year.

North Dakota — Logan Nissley, Century (Bismarck)
Headed to Nebraska on a basketball scholarship, the two-sport standout also was named the state Class-A senior athlete of the year though the Patriots fell in a wild, five-set state finals loss to Sheyenne. She had 20 kills, 23 digs and 3 blocks in the title match and passed the 1,000 career kill mark.

Ohio — Brooke Bultema, Ursuline Academy (Cincinnati)
Part of a huge recruiting class for Kentucky, Bultema led the 25-3 Lions to their first Division I title since 2018. She had 376 kills and 107 blocks, and ended her prep career with 1,037 kills.

Oklahoma — Brynn Roberts, Jenks
The Trojans fell in the 6A title game, but Roberts was sensational all season leading Jenks to a 35-5 record. She had 1,078 assists with 170 digs and 100 kills this season. She notched double-digit assists in every game in 2022, including a high of 65 against Norman North and 57 in the title meeting against Edmond North.

Oregon — Beaux Bruegman, Sheldon (Eugene)
The senior setter was named to the 6A all-tournament team after leading the Irish to a 3-1 state finals win over Jesuit. Also a basketball standout, she notched 36 assists and 11 kills in the victory as Sheldon went 29-5 on the season.

Pennsylvania — Mia Tuman, North Allegheny (Wexford)

The Ohio State commit is a MaxPreps All-American after leading the Tigers to their sixth straight PIAA title. She had 841 assists with 171 kills, 70 aces and 287 digs as North Allegheny finished 22-1.



Rhode Island — Annie Draper, North Kingstown
The 5-10 junior helped the Skippers get back to their state-title winning ways. She pounded 206 kills with 152 digs on the season as North Kingstown went 18-2 and swept South Kingstown in the finals.

South Carolina — Jurnee Robinson, Mauldin
The Mavericks went 32-7 with a 5A title behind 538 kills from the future Tiger. She had 324 digs and 51 aces as well. She finishes with 1,445 kills.

South Dakota — Bergen Reilly, O'Gorman (Sioux Falls)

Headed to Nebraska, she had 440 kills with 338 digs for the Knights, who went 26-6. But the highlight might have been being asked to leave the Knights to play with the USA Volleyball team in the Pan Am Final Six in September, likely the first time a prep player has been asked to compete with the Olympic-level team in nearly 20 years.

Tennessee — Lauren Hurst, Cleveland

The Blue Raiders' sophomore sensation joined her older sister Addison on the MaxPrep All-American team. Lauren led the team in kills with 659 as the Blue Raiders went 49-5 with a Division I Class AAA state title. In two seasons, she has 1,163 kills.

Texas — Nayeli Gonzalez, Cornerstone Christian (San Antonio
Dropped 573 kills, hitting at a 37 percent clip for the No. 2 team in the MaxPreps Top 25, which finished the year 55-2 playing a national schedule. Cornerstone coach Mike Carter calls the Iowa State commit the most dominant hitter he's had in 33 years of coaching. She finishes with 1,535 kills for her career.

Utah — Jordyn Harvey, Bountiful

The Redhawks went 29-2 behind 480 kills from Harvey. She posted double-digit kill totals in all but four matches this season, averaging 4.9 kills per set. In four postseason matches, she averaged 23 kills, including 39 in a five-set win over Maple Mountain in the third-place match.

Vermont — Izzy Nerad, Essex (Essex Junction)
The Hornets' junior was a catalyst behind their unbeaten season and state title. In the finals against Champlain Valley Union, the 6-1 hitter had nine kills and a pair of aces.

Virginia — Milan Rex, Alexandria City (Alexandria)
The Titans' senior was dominating all season, but dialed up another notch in three postseason matches averaging more than 28 kills en route to a 6A title. In 90 sets, the UC Santa Barbara commit hammered 582 kills with 315 digs as Alexandria City went 32-2.

Washington — Hailey Brockway, Graham-Kapowsin (Graham)
The Eagles' hitter heads to Illinois State with an Evergreen State 4A title in her pocket after leading GK to a 25-5 mark and the crown. A powerful swinger and six-rotation player, Brockway led the Eagles with 551 kills along with 213 digs. The senior tallied double-digit kills in every match in 2022 and ran off a streak of 19, 25, 33, 22, 25 and 20 kills in the postseason.



West Virginia — Hannah Howard, Musselman (Inwood)
The captain of the Class AAA all-state team, the Applemen's senior tallied 472 kills as her team went 41-9-1 on the way to the AAA title. A two-time state champion, Howard finished with 1,605 kills and 1,603 digs.

Wisconsin — Lilly Wagner, Oconomowoc
A MaxPreps All-American, Wagner led the Raccoons with 1,075 assists and helped them to a 39-2 record. Wagner returns next season looking for a Wisconsin state title after falling in the Division 1 finals before heading to Maryland. She added 114 kills as she fed hitters who combined for more than 1,000 kills. She added 470 digs and 95 aces

Wyoming — Peyton Carruth, Kelly Walsh (Casper)

The Trojans' standout is staying in state to play collegiately for the Cowboys after an impressive senior season that ended with a Kelly Walsh 4A title. Carruth posted 396 kills and 323 digs as the Trojans went 34-1. She dropped 21, 27 and 17 kills in the 4A tournament against Thunder Basin, Laramie and Cody.
