Baseball Preview: Massac County Patriots vs. Herrin Tigers

The Massac County Patriots will venture away from home to face off against the Herrin Tigers at 4:30 p.m. on Friday. Massac County will come into the match with an undefeated record on the line.

Massac County will bounce into Friday's game after beating Harrisburg, who they had gone 0-9 against in their nine prior meetings. The Patriots came out on top against the Bulldogs by a score of 7-2 on Tuesday. Seven seems to be a good number for the Patriots as the squad scooped up a victory with the same number of runs in their previous game.

Zach Maurer made a big impact while hitting and pitching. He pitched seven innings while giving up just two earned runs off seven hits. He has been consistent : he hasn't given up more than one walk in six consecutive appearances. He was also solid in the batter's box, scoring a run and stealing a base while going 2-for-3. What's more, he posted two RBI, the most he's had since back in May of 2024.

In other batting news, Brayden Jennings was excellent, scoring two runs and stealing a base while going 1-for-3. Devin Harris also deserves some recognition as he scored his first run of the season.

Herrin not only won on Wednesday, but they posted their biggest win since March 21st. They put the hurt on Waltonville with a sharp 9-2 win.

Herrin also got a great performance from Corbin Roberts as he pitched 6.1 innings while giving up just one earned (and one unearned) run off four hits. The Tigers are 2-1 when Roberts allows one or fewer earned runs, but 4-5 otherwise.

On the hitting side, Carter McCree and Jaxon Hudson did most of the damage at the plate: McCree scored three runs while getting on base in three of his four plate appearances, while Hudson went 2-for-3 with two RBI.

Massac County's victory was their ninth straight on the road dating back to last season, which pushed their record up to 8-0. Those road wins came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 2.0 runs on average over those games. As for Herrin, the victory got them back to even at 6-6.
