2025 Team Previews
1) Potosi/Cassville scored an impressive early win over Cuba City to begin the season and wouldn't slow down from there, going on to win the Six Rivers Conference and finishing a perfect 9-0 during the regular season. In the playoffs, they'd defeat league rivals Black Hawk/Warren and River Ridge for a second time each, then down a talented Kenosha St. Joseph team to get back to the state final in Division 7 for the first time since forming the co-op in 2017. They'd settle for a silver ball as state runners-up after falling to Edgar. "We return a great nucleus of young men who got valuable experience last season," said veteran head coach Mark Siegert. "Team size and athleticism will be something we lean into in 2025. We are having another great year in our strength and conditioning program and are developing our senior leaders to help lead the way." While just three starters are back on both sides of the ball, there are 23 returning letterwinners and many players who saw valuable time on either varsity or JV a year ago.
2) River Ridge put together an excellent 2024 campaign, rebounded from a couple of early conference losses to Black Hawk/Warren and Potosi/Cassville (by a combined eight points) to finish the regular season 7-2. They'd win road playoff games over Cashton and Bangor before finally going out to Potosi/Cassville in the sectional championship. "We need to replace a huge chunk of production from last year," said head coach Wade Winkers. "How well individuals step up into their new roles will determine our success." The Timberwolves are ahead of many teams with the return of quarterback Brandon Davis, who has operated the team's option offense the last two years and will be one of the league's top players. "His return allows us to really develop all the new faces," added Winkers. River Ridge brings back four starters on offense and five on defense.
3) Black Hawk/Warren was shocked by Southwestern/East Dubuque in the season-opener, but rebounded to win seven straight before falling to Potosi/Cassville in the regular season finale. They'd get matched up with Potosi/Cassville again in the first playoff game, falling in a tough 7-6 ballgame. "The team's strengths are that we should be more athletic and faster than we have been in the past," said head coach Desmond Breadon. "We have the ability to be more explosive this year on offense, and our defensive line will be the strength of our defense. One of our weaknesses is that we lost a lot of starters, so early in the season, we won't have as much experience. Another weakness is our total amount of players; we don't have a lot of reserve players." The Blackhawks return three starters on offense this year, with four back on defense.
4) Wauzeka/Seneca was one of three teams to make the move from the Ridge & Valley to the Six Rivers last year, and the co-op program was able to make the playoffs, sneaking in with a 3-4 conference record, finishing 4-6 overall after a Level 1 playoff loss to Cochrane-Fountain City. "After an up-and-down season last year, largely due to early injuries, we're entering this season with high expectations and aiming to rebound to contend for a top spot in the conference," said head coach Derrick Joy. "We're fortunate to have 14 seniors on the roster, many of whom bring valuable varsity experience." The skill positions will be a strength, with quarterback Cooper Lomas, running back Carson Sime, and excellent tight end Jackson Konichek returning.
5) Iowa-Grant moved into the Six Rivers Conference last year and was able to put together one of its more successful seasons of the last decade. The Panthers finished fourth in the eight-team league and made just their second playoff appearance since 2017, though they'd go out to Bangor in the first game. The team figures to be one of the more experienced groups in the conference, and a dark horse to slide into the upper half of the standings behind the return of 19 letterwinners, many of whom either have starting experience or have played considerable time. Head coach Hayden Link is excited about having Brock Hinderman available at quarterback for a full season after he threw for 1,162 yards and seven touchdowns in six-and-a-half games in 2024. The receiving corps has a number of guys with experience, as does the running back group, with Sam Lundell, Cole Schauff, and Landon Friesen among the skill standouts.
6) Pecatonica/Argyle went 3-6 overall last year, finishing 2-7 in conference play and well off the pace of the top teams in the always-tough league. Numbers are trending in the right direction for the long-term co-op program. "We graduated six and are bringing in nearly 20 from incoming freshmen," said head coach Mark Stateler. "We remain young, but many of our young players are returning starters. This is the third year for the players and coaches to be together and to continue to learn and grow on both sides of the ball." The team welcomes back eight starters on offense and seven on defense.
7) Riverdale scored just one victory last year, a 26-6 rivalry win over Boscobel late in the year, as the Chieftains finished 1-8 overall. The team returns a nice core of players, including the entire backfield, as many juniors will be among the returning starters, of which eight are back on offense and nine on defense.
8) Boscobel did not win a game for a second consecutive season, as the Bulldogs have not tasted victory since September of 2022, a stretch of 23 games overall and 18 in the conference. The team has to replace quarterback Landon Haessly, top rusher Bryar Wayne, and leading receiver Cameron Loos, as the Bulldogs are still chasing the first-ever playoff appearance in school history.
