The Riverdale Warriors will challenge the Cascade Champions at 6:00 p.m. on Monday. Riverdale is strutting in with some hitting muscle as they've averaged 9.8 runs per game this season.
Riverdale easily dispatched Warren County on Tuesday, but unfortunately both the margin and the ultimate result were a different story in this one. Riverdale fell just short of Forrest by a score of 7-5 on Thursday. The matchup marked the Warriors' lowest-scoring game so far this season.
Riverdale got a good showing from Makayla Wilkerson, who tossed three innings while giving up just one earned run off three hits. Wilkerson has been nothing but reliable on the mound: she hasn't given up more than two walks any time she's pitched this season.
At the plate, Bella Waldrop was cooking despite her team's loss, scoring a run while going 3-for-4. Lashaundra Fleming was another key player, going 1-for-3 with one triple, one run, and one RBI.
Even though they lost, Riverdale kept the outfield on their toes and finished the game with 12 hits. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now got at least 12 hits every time they've taken the field this season.
Meanwhile, Cascade came up short against Columbia Central on Friday and fell 7-3.
Cascade saw four different players step up and record at least one hit. One of them was Christina Bilbro, who scored a run while going 1-for-2. Kloey Carter also deserves some recognition as she got her first hit of the season.
Cascade's loss dropped their record down to 2-2. As for Riverdale, they now have a losing record of 2-3.
Cascade's pitching crew has a crucial task ahead of them: Riverdale has been making plenty of contact this season, having averaged 14.2 hits per game. It's a different story for Cascade, though, as they've been averaging 9 hits. Given Riverdale's sizable advantage in that area, Cascade will need to find a way to close that gap.
Riverdale took their victory against Cascade when the teams last played back in April of 2021 by a conclusive 18-4. Does Riverdale have another victory up their sleeve, or will Cascade turn the tables on them? We'll have the answer soon enough.
