Soccer Game Preview: Westmoreland vs. Mathews

The Westmoreland Eagles are taking a road trip to square off against the Mathews Blue Devils at 6:00 p.m. on Thursday. Both teams are coming into the matchup red-hot, with Westmoreland sitting on four straight victories and Mathews on five.

If Mathews heads into halftime all tied up, they better play a good second half: that's when Westmoreland took over last week. The Eagles won by a goal and slipped past King William 2-1. That's two games straight that Westmoreland have won by just one goal.

Meanwhile, winning is always nice, but doing so behind a season-high score is even better (just ask Mathews). They were the clear victors by an 8-0 margin over King & Queen Central last Friday. Mathews might be getting used to big wins seeing as the team has won five games by four goals or more this season.

Their offense was hitting King & Queen Central from everywhere, as six different players booted in a goal. Seth James led that balanced group of strikers and accounted for three goals all by himself.

Mathews' win was their third straight on the road, which pushed their record up to 10-2-1. The road victories came thanks in part to their defensive effort, having only given up one goal over those three contests. As for Westmoreland, their win bumped their record up to 5-6.

Westmoreland beat Mathews 5-3 when the teams last played back in March of 2024. The rematch might be a little tougher for the Eagles since the squad won't have the home-pitch advantage this time around. We'll see if the change in venue makes a difference.
