Football Recap: La Mirada Starts Season with Victory at Home

La Mirada took care of business in their home opener on Friday. They strolled past the South Gate Rams with points to spare, taking the game 34-16. The final result isn't all that surprising considering the Matadores' considerable advantage in MaxPreps' California football rankings (they are ranked 249th, while the Rams are ranked 697th).

Ismael Garcia was a one-man wrecking crew as he rushed for 237 yards and a pair of scores while picking up 8.8 yards per carry. He was no stranger to the big play, turning on the jets for a run that went for 55 yards.

They were just one part of a punishing run game: La Mirada was unstoppable on the ground and finished the game with 290 rushing yards. They easily outclassed their opponents in that department as South Gate only rushed for 96 rushing yards.

Despite the loss, South Gate had strong showings from Nicholas Quintanilla, who gained 102 total yards and a touchdown, and Ephaunie Lewis, who picked up 86 receiving yards and one touchdown.

La Mirada wasted no time getting back out on the field and has already played their next game, a 24-21 win against Troy on the 28th. As for South Gate, they have also already played their next matchup, a 38-10 victory against Lynwood on the 28th.
