Basketball Recap: Los Gatos Falls Despite Big Games from Anthony Martin and Zach Otoupal

It was a good run, but Los Gatos unfortunately witnessed the end of their three-game winning streak on Friday. They fell just short of the Aptos Mariners by a score of 50-47. The loss was a bit of a surprise, as the Wildcats came into the matchup with a sizable advantage in MaxPreps' California basketball rankings (they are ranked 51st, while the Mariners are ranked 261st).

Despite the loss, Los Gatos had strong showings from Zach Otoupal, who dropped a double-double on 21 points and 11 rebounds, and Anthony Martin, who went 6 of 15 on his way to 16 points and six boards. That was a full 34% of Los Gatos' points, marking the third time in a row he's posted more than a third of the team's points. The team also got some help courtesy of Blake Mordaunt, who put up seven points.

Even though they lost, Los Gatos smashed the offensive glass and finished the game with 12 offensive boards. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now pulled down at least 12 offensive rebounds in three consecutive contests.

Los Gatos' defeat dropped their record down to 8-2. As for Aptos, the victory made it two in a row for them and bumps their season record up to 8-3.

Los Gatos won't have much time to rest: their next game is against Santa Teresa at 5:00 p.m. on Saturday. Santa Teresa knows how to get points on the board -- the team has finished with 55 points or more in their past eight matches -- so hopefully Los Gatos likes a good challenge. As for Aptos, they also won't have to wait long for more action: they'll take on Half Moon Bay at 8:00 p.m. on Saturday. Half Moon Bay will roll in looking for their seventh straight win, something Aptos surely won't give up without a fight.
