Basketball Recap: Sunset Comes Up Short

Sunset was the 56-48 winner over Mater Bay Academy when they last played one another on January 7th, but their luck changed this time around. The Sunset Knights fell 46-39 to the Mater Bay Academy Rays on Friday.

When it comes to explaining why Sunset lost, don't look at Brandon Luis. Despite the final result, he posted 15 points. The match was Luis' 13th in a row with at least ten points. The team also got some help courtesy of Ethan Rojas, who put up eight points along with five rebounds and three blocks.

Mater Bay Academy found their leader in sophomore Alexander Guererro, who went 6 of 13 en route to 16 points in addition to seven boards and three steals. That's the most points Guererro has posted since back in November of 2024. Kevin Rodriguez was another key player, putting up ten points and six rebounds.

Sunset's defeat dropped their record down to 8-7. As for Mater Bay Academy, the victory (which was their third in a row) raised their record to 14-3.

Sunset has already played their next contest, a 49-41 loss against Archbishop Carroll on the 27th. As for Mater Bay Academy, they also wasted no time getting back out on the court and have already played their next game, a 71-30 win against Somerset College Prepartory Academy South on the 27th.
