Basketball Recap: Vinton County Vikings vs. Athens Bulldogs
Vinton County lost against Athens back in February of 2024 and unfortunately they wound up with the same result on Wednesday. The Vinton County Vikings were dealt a 62-26 defeat at the hands of the Athens Bulldogs. While losing is never fun, the Vikings can't take it too hard given the team's big disadvantage in MaxPreps' Ohio basketball rankings (they are ranked 377th, while the Bulldogs are ranked 66th).
Athens' win was the result of several impressive offensive performances. One of the most notable came from Ella Chapman, who almost dropped a double-double on 14 points and nine boards. Those nine rebounds gave Chapman a new career-high. Asa Holcombe was another key player, putting up 16 points along with six assists and four steals.
This is the second loss in a row for Vinton County and nudges their season record down to 10-6. As for Athens, their record now sits at 12-3.
Vinton County will be playing in front of their home fans against River Valley at 6:00 p.m. on Monday. Vinton County is on a five-game streak of home wins, River Valley a three-game streak of away wins -- so someone will have to leave a streak behind on the court. As for Athens, they wasted no time getting back out on the court and have already played their next game, a 64-22 victory against Wellston on the 23rd.
