Softball Recap: Mercer County Picks Up Third Consecutive Win

Mercer County won against Ridgewood [AlWood/Cambridge] last Saturday with eight runs and they decided to stick to that run total again on Tuesday. Mercer County was the clear victor by an 8-2 margin over the Bureau Valley Storm. The Golden Eagles' win was nothing new given the team hasn't lost yet this season.

Elsie Cook made a splash while hitting and pitching. She struck out eight batters over seven innings while giving up just two earned runs off eight hits. She has been consistent recently: she hasn't given up more than two walks any time she's pitched this season. She was also big at the plate, going 3-for-4 with two doubles. Those two doubles gave her a new career-high.

In other batting news, Maddy Campbell-Baker and Natalie Thomson did most of the damage at the plate: Campbell-Baker scored three runs while going 2-for-4, while Thomson scored two runs and stole a base while going 3-for-4. Those three runs gave Campbell-Baker a new career-high. Another player making a difference was Jayden Weeks, who went 2-for-3 with two RBI.

Mercer County's record is now 3-0. As for Bureau Valley, they are on a four-game losing streak that has dropped them down to 2-4.

Coming up, Mercer County will face off against Illini West at 4:30 p.m. on Thursday. Mercer County's pitchers better be ready for this one: Illini West has averaged an impressive 7.2 runs per game this season. As for Bureau Valley, they will challenge Hall at 4:30 p.m. on Friday.
