Baseball Game Preview: Thornton Academy Trojans vs. Gorham Rams

The Thornton Academy Trojans will challenge the Gorham Rams at 4:30 p.m. on Tuesday. The last three games Thornton Academy has played have been within two runs, so don't be surprised if it's a close one.

Thornton Academy is coming in fresh off a high-stakes matchup with another one of Maine's top teams: Marshwood, who was ranked 14th at the time (Thornton Academy was ranked 25th). The Trojans fell just short of the Hawks by a score of 2-1 on Friday. Having soared to a lofty ten runs in the game before, the Trojans couldn't push the score so high this time.

Beck Edgerly was a force to be reckoned with on the mound despite the final result: he struck out six batters over ten innings while giving up just two earned runs off ten hits. He has been nothing but reliable: he hasn't given up more than two walks in five consecutive appearances.

Meanwhile, winning is always nice, but doing so behind a season-high score is even better (just ask Gorham). They blew past Deering 20-1 on Monday. Considering Gorham has won eight matchups by more than six runs this season, Monday's blowout was nothing new.

Gorham's win was their sixth straight at home, which pushed their record up to 11-2. Those home victories came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 0.3 runs on average over those games. As for Thornton Academy, their loss ended a five-game streak of away wins and brought them to 9-2-1.
