Basketball Recap: Maple Mountain Gets Big Victory over Higher-Ranked Coronado

Maple Mountain's game on Wednesday was a loss, but they didn't let that memory haunt them on Thursday. They took down the Coronado Cougars 64-49. The win was all the more spectacular given the Golden Eagles' disadvantage in MaxPreps' basketball rankings in their respective home states (they are ranked 65th in Utah, while the Cougars are ranked second in Nevada).

Maple Mountain found their leader in sophomore Leah Bailey, who dropped a double-double on 23 points and 12 rebounds. The dominant performance gave Bailey a new career-high in boards. Shay Brown was another key player, going 5 of 6 on her way to 12 points and five rebounds.

Maple Mountain smashed the offensive glass and finished the game with 13 offensive boards. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now pulled down at least eight offensive rebounds in nine consecutive matches.

Coronado lost despite a true team effort on offense, the best among them being Gabrielle Zimmerman, who posted 13 points. The team also got some help courtesy of Scarlet Lopez, who had 12 points.

Maple Mountain now has a winning record of 5-4. As for Coronado, they moved to 5-1 with that loss, which also ended their five-game winning streak.

Maple Mountain will get to enjoy the win for a while: their next game is against Timpview at 7:00 p.m. on January 3, 2025. Maple Mountain is strutting in with some offensive muscle as they've averaged 56.4 points per game this season. As for Coronado, they won't have much time to rest: their next contest is against Virgin Valley at 6:30 p.m. on Friday. One thing working in Virgin Valley's favor is that they have posted at least 55 points in their last nine games.
