Basketball Recap: Veterans Proves Higher State Rank Is No Mistake

Veterans won the last time they faced Coffee and things went their way on Tuesday too. The Veterans Warhawks strolled past the Coffee Trojans with points to spare, taking the game 78-63. Given the Warhawks' advantage in MaxPreps' Georgia basketball rankings (they are ranked 139th, while the Trojans are ranked 400th), the result wasn't entirely unexpected.

Veterans had a senior duo take command as Aiden Sweenor went 9 for 17 en route to 25 points and Tristen Abner dropped a double-double on 17 points and ten rebounds. That's the most points Sweenor has posted since back in December of 2024. Jordan Watson was another key player, putting up ten points.

Veterans smashed the offensive glass and finished the game with 12 offensive boards. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now pulled down at least eight offensive rebounds in five consecutive matches.

Despite the loss, Coffee saw an underclassman step up: sophomore Tresean Smith dropped a double-double on 13 points and ten boards. Those ten rebounds set a new season-high mark for Smith. The team also got some help courtesy of Jerimyha Perry, who went 6 of 12 on his way to 13 points.

Veterans' victory was their third straight on the road, which pushed their record up to 13-8. As for Coffee, they have also been struggling recently as they've lost 11 of their last 12 games, which put a noticeable dent in their 4-16 record this season.

Veterans has already played their next contest, a 67-62 defeat against Thomas County Central on the 31st. As for Coffee, they also wasted no time getting back out on the court and have already played their next match, a 69-56 loss against Northside on the 31st.
