Basketball Recap: Layla Lesure's Big Game Can't Quite Lead Plainfield South over Dekalb

Plainfield South was the 52-47 winner over DeKalb when they last played one another back in December of 2023, but their luck changed this time around. The Plainfield South Cougars fell 54-45 to the DeKalb Barbs on Monday. While losing is never fun, the Cougars can't take it too hard given the team's big disadvantage in MaxPreps' Illinois basketball rankings (they are ranked 312th, while the Barbs are ranked 109th).

Plainfield South lost despite a true team effort on offense, the best among them being Layla Lesure, who dropped a double-double on ten points and 11 rebounds. Lesure has been hot recently, having posted ten or more rebounds the last four times she's played. The team also got some help courtesy of La'Niya Willis, who posted 13 points in addition to five assists and five steals.

Even though they lost, Plainfield South smashed the offensive glass and finished the game with 16 offensive boards. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now pulled down at least eight offensive boards in four consecutive matchups.

Plainfield South has been struggling recently as they've lost four of their last five games, which put a noticeable dent in their 8-10 record this season. As for DeKalb, the win was the fifth in a row for them, bringing their record for this year to 13-5.

Plainfield South wasted no time getting back out on the court and has already played their next contest, a 69-58 defeat against Yorkville on the 14th. As for DeKalb, they will venture away from home to take on Metea Valley at 7:00 p.m. on Thursday.
