Softball Game Preview: Borrego Springs Rams vs. Calipatria Hornets

The Borrego Springs Rams will head out on the road to challenge the Calipatria Hornets at 3:30 p.m. on Wednesday. Borrego Springs has given up an average of 17.8 runs per game this season, but Wednesday's game will give them a chance to turn things around.

For whatever reason, it's the away team that's had the advantage when Borrego Springs and Julian meet (two straight games heading into this one) and that held true again on Friday. The Rams lost 17-11 to the Eagles. Despite running the score up even higher than they did in their prior game on Tuesday (ten), the Rams still had to take the loss.

Anavey Gonzalez and Lylamae Gutierrez did some serious damage despite the final result: Gonzalez got on base in four of her nine plate appearances with five stolen bases, three runs, and one triple, while Gutierrez went 4-for-5 with five stolen bases, five runs, and one RBI. Gutierrez is crushing it when it comes to stolen bases: she's snagged at least one every time she's taken the field this season. Another player making a difference was Kayla Rodriguez, who went 2-for-5 with two runs, one stolen base, and one double.

Meanwhile, Calipatria came up short against Julian on Wednesday and fell 10-7. The Hornets have now taken an 'L' in back-to-back games.

Calipatria's loss dropped their record down to 2-8. As for Borrego Springs, they have traveled a rocky road recently, having lost five of their last six contests. That's put a noticeable dent in their 5-8 record this season.

Borrego Springs suffered a grim 18-5 defeat to Calipatria in their previous matchup on April 8th. Can the Rams avenge their defeat or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
