Softball Game Preview: Saguaro Sabercats vs. Maricopa Rams

The Saguaro Sabercats will be taking part in a tournament against the Maricopa Rams at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday. Expect the scorekeeper to be kept busy: if their previous games are any indication, the two teams will really light up the scoreboard.

Saguaro will bounce into Saturday's matchup after beating Bourgade Catholic, who they had gone 0-4 against in their four prior meetings. Saguaro walked away with an 11-7 victory over Bourgade Catholic on Thursday. The Sabercats' hitters stepped up their game for this one, as that was the most runs they've scored all season.

Malina Morones made a big impact no matter where she played. She pitched six innings while giving up just two earned (and five unearned) runs off six hits. Morones was also big at the plate, scoring two runs while going 2-for-4. What's more, she posted two RBI, the most she's had since back in April of 2024.

In other batting news, Hailey Holliday was incredible, firing off two home runs, three runs, and four RBI while going 2-for-3. That's the most RBI she has posted since back in April of 2024. Sophia Chiouinard was another key player, scoring three runs and stealing a base while going 3-for-3.

Saguaro was getting hits left and right and finished the game having posted a batting average of .385. That was just more of the same: they've now posted a batting average of .316 or higher in four consecutive contests.

Meanwhile, neither Maricopa nor Westwood could gain the upper hand on Friday so the two teams had to settle for a 13-13 draw.

Saguaro's record is now 2-6. Maricopa's tie gives them a new season record of 6-4-1.

Saguaro beat Maricopa 11-6 in their previous matchup back in April of 2016. The rematch might be a little tougher for Saguaro since the squad won't have the home-field advantage this time around. We'll see if the change in venue makes a difference.
