Volleyball Game Preview: Athens Bluejays vs. Marathon Red Raiders

Athens and Marathon are an even 5-5 against one another since September of 2016, but not for long. The Bluejays will square off against the Red Raiders at 7:00 p.m. on Thursday. Athens is coming into the matchup on a three-game losing streak.

Athens came up short against Rib Lake on Tuesday, falling 3-0.

While Athens was not able to make it on the board, they still kept things close, especially in the first set. The final score came out to 25-23, 25-18, 25-20.

Vanessa Espinoza put forth a good effort for the losing side as she had ten digs and two assists.

Meanwhile, Marathon got their first taste of in-conference action on Tuesday and they started things off strong. They blew past Assumption 3-0. That three set margin sets a new team best for the Red Raiders this season.

Not only was the match a shutout, it was a big one: Marathon took every set by at least 13 points. Once all was said and done, the final score wound up at 25-9, 25-12, 25-2.

The loss was their first at home , dropping their record down to 9-17. As for Marathon, the victory made it two in a row for them and bumps their season record up to 10-11.

Athens was able to grind out a solid win over Marathon when the teams last played back in October of 2023, winning 3-1. Will the Bluejays repeat their success, or do the Red Raiders have a new game plan this time around? We'll find out soon enough.
