Basketball Recap: Mt. Vernon Victorious

Mt. Vernon's game last Saturday was a loss, but they didn't let that memory haunt them on Saturday. In a tight matchup that could have gone either way, they made off with a 42-41 victory over the Highland Bulldogs. Given the Rams' advantage in MaxPreps' Illinois basketball rankings (they are ranked 15th, while the Bulldogs are ranked 148th), the result wasn't entirely unexpected.

Mt. Vernon's win was a true team effort, with many players turning in solid performances. Perhaps the best among them was Kamaree Pollard, who went 5 for 11 on her way to 18 points. The game was Pollard's fifth in a row with at least ten points. Melaina Zedalis was another key player, putting up 11 points along with seven boards and three steals.

Mt. Vernon's record is now 15-2. As for Highland, their loss dropped their record down to 9-12.

Mt. Vernon didn't take long to hit the court again: they've already played their next contest, a 66-51 defeat against Triad on the 14th. As for Highland, they will take on Mascoutah at 6:00 p.m. on Friday.
